To use it:

1. Go to http://www.remarkableconferences.com/registration/

2. Click on "Conference Registration" on the left hand side

3. Follow the instructions and use coupon code SPKR08

Here's a bit of info about the conference:

The Remarkable Women's Conference brings together 500 women from all cross-sections of the community with the goal of making quality connections and finding ways to support each other. We are a completely local conference and are generally the best fit for someone who is looking for quality of connections and who has been frustrated by conferences where people seemed to only be interested in selling whatever they could at the conference instead of building relationships.

Here are some testimonials from last year's participants:

I have attended between 28 and 30 tradeshows, events, craft shows and conferences a year for the last two years and I have never had such wonderful and significant connections than I did at the Remarkable Women's Conference. I am proud to be their silver sponsor and I am looking forward to next year's event! I would encourage any size business or organization to take advantage of this truly remarkable event and sponsor, purchase a booth or at least participate in the conference in 2008. This will only grow to a powerful and world recognized event! Thank you for putting this on and having Your Local City a part of it!

~Tonya Hofmann, Owner of Your Local City

I have attended a lot of seminars/conferences and I really have the say that
this was a bang up job for any conference let alone the first. I really
have no suggestions for improvement, more encouragement to keep it
going.

~Ella Johnston-Leger

Everything was so thoughtfully planned. The speakers were outstanding and
some of the insights I received that weekend will impact my life for years
to come. The value of the conference is so much more than what was
charged.

~Delia Trujillo

I enjoyed the variety of topics addressed. Thank you for your enthusiasm,
organization and attention to details. Hands down the best conference of
any kind I have ever attended.

~Anna Easterling

The Best women came to this. I had more fun meeting new people than I have
had in Austin in a long time! Very efficient! Staff was well prepared and
very lovely and welcoming!

~Mary Thomajan

And the CONFERENCE...it was incredible. Such unbelievable planning and
communication beforehand, then such beautiful female energy all over that
conference. I was so impressed. Thank you again for including me, I was
very honored.

~Beverly Alexander

We did the Remarkable Women's Conference last year and the only thing I regret is not getting involved sooner. We have done a number of trade shows and one of the remarkable things about this one was that it was so tightly run. Things happened on time and problems were dealt with quickly. This is not a short term gain conference. If you are looking to swoop into town and sell a lot of product, go somewhere else. This is really a place where you gain by creating long lasting relationships. On an additional note, as a man at a women's conference I felt welcomed. We will do the Remarkable Women's Conference again based on how well it was run and the relationships we made there. Also, keep in mind that last year was the first year and they did a great job, I'm really looking forward to seeing what is different this year, I imagine it will be even better.

~David Jones, Austin Healing Herbs & Acupuncture

# # #

Note From Sandra

Hello!

Prince and I are very excited to let you know that we'll be speaking at the upcoming Remarkable Women's Conference on June 7 & 8. What isn't always made so clear in those formative years is the question of what type of reputation does one really want to have?

I suppose what I am also referring to is peer pressure, something that follows us well into adulthood. Peer pressure certainly can add much confusion to the process of trying to establish our own identity and the building of a reputation based on who really are. Yet, when you get right down to it, the onus is always on us to muster up the courage to choose to be who we are really meant to be so that we can bring to the world the gifts we are truly meant to contribute.

So, throughout childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood... how many times did you "go along" just to "get along" so you could be part of an in-crowd (and possibly have lost some aspect of your real self)?

In your professional life... how many times have you "gone along" just to "get along" so you could be part of an in-crowd (and possibly have lost some aspect of your real self and professional credibility)?

Does the world really need another carbon copy?
Aren't you worthy of being known for the wonderful essence of you?

Build a reputation based upon the true gifts you have to share with the world.
You are absolutely worthy of this!!!

# # #
Need a truly inspiring...
*KEYNOTE SPEAKER
*WORKSHOP PRESENTER
*or COACH??

CONTACT:

It’s not about how

“It’s not about how you achieve your dreams. (such well done executive leadership!!)

Rather than rant and rave from the soapbox of "did these people forget about Enron and Worldcom????", perhaps I'll try a different route by which to share why I've decided to write about Dell's foolishness and what I think about it.

It's all on account of Labor Day.

Yeah, I know a week has come and gone since Labor Day weekend, but a particular theme stuck with me. You see, for grins, I looked up Labor Day on Wikipedia:

...a day off for the "working man".

That's certainly a minuscule portion of the whole entry, and it also applies to the "working woman", but that's the theme that stuck with me.

This brings me back to Dell.

We may no longer live in the Industrial Era, but make no mistake, we absolutely still have factory workers in this country (much less elsewhere). And a high tech company like Dell would crumble without these people no matter what part of the world the factories are located.

So, while executive level decision makers (and others) were living out Dell's culture of expediency to the max by committing "white collar" crime (now you know the real Soul of Dell), the "blue collar" folks are suffering for it.

What do I mean by this? Dell is an environment that, by its very essence, chews people up and spits them out. I know this because I once worked on one of their assembly lines. There are plenty of other people who can share their stories, too. I don't want to get hung up on this particular issue.

My real point is that I know quarterly numbers/predictions are released to keep shareholders and partner entities happy. Yet, it's often the most crucial stakeholders, the warehouse and assembly line workers, who show the most hope and faith in those numbers and speeches that are presented to them at quarterly all-hands meetings.

With this scandal, how would you say their spirits and sense of loyalty, sense of pride in their work, have been affected? The long hours on their feet away from loved ones doing physically demanding work... might some of them be wondering what it has it amounted to? Then there's the issue of investment decisions employees make...

Also, I know you've all heard some variation of the classic adage "piss don't roll uphill."
When the whip gets cracked to make up for lost time and lost revenue, who's going to be required to put in even more overtime in the warehouse and on the assembly line? The working man/woman. The blue collar employee. Many of whom, all too often, are the working poor.

I suppose at certain levels in the hierarchy 17 isn't that large a number.

When you're plugging along at the very foundation that the pyramid exists on, 17 is huge.

# # #
Need a truly inspiring KEYNOTE SPEAKER, WORKSHOP PRESENTER, or COACH?? Click this button now:

“Out of the mouths of babes”

I don’t know Heather Higgins, and I’ve certainly never met her in person. It takes courage to see past concerns of “maintaining image” and “one’s place in the power structure.” It takes courage to share one’s real story (and no, I’m not speaking of the stuff of tabloids or “tell-all” paperback books on the shelves of grocery stores and airport gift shops).

In all honesty though, I don’t believe that Heather set out to prove how courageous she is. I suspect she was driven by the urge to share, teach, show options, and to be in service to others.

Folks, that absolutely is being a LEADER.

I can think of some Presidents, CEOs, and EDs that can learn a heck of a lot from young Heather Higgins.

Check out Heather’s book and story here:
http://stores.lulu.com/heatherhiggins

# # #
Need a truly inspiring KEYNOTE SPEAKER, WORKSHOP PRESENTER, or COACH??
Contact me now:

Intentional Leadership pt. 2

An Interview With Sandra Ries & Prince Rahman of Intentional-Leadership.info

*Tell us more about this Followership piece.

We’re putting emphasis on Followership because we want to encourage people to do more than just keep their heads down and punch the time clock. No matter what the folks at the top say and do, followers have the power to affect the culture and behavior of an organization. The productivity they create, if they make the conscious choice to be intentional about their presence and how they follow, is amazing; it certainly impacts that proverbial bottom line in wonderful ways.

*Enjoy the journey? We don't subscribe to the belief that fun and work are incompatible. Yes there's work to be done… it will be done more effectively by people who are taking care of themselves, people who can communicate clearly and act effectively. These people are also more likely to be happy and confident which again plays into productivity. If you want genuine growth and sustainable success, you must establish a culture that supports your initiatives. We approach change through the three pillars of Being the Change, Cultivating Followership and Enjoying the Journey. We deliberately chose non-standard “policy and procedure” consulting terminology!

*What do you mean by Being the Change?

If you desire to create positive change in the environment around you, it starts with you. Improving your capabilities in the areas that are necessary to support and enhance the change you want to see around you gives you credibility to mentor and develop others.

*What do you mean by Followership?

We believe followers have as much power as the leaders to affect the course of events. Leaders hold the vision and provide the structure for success. Followers are the ones who build within that structure and bring the vision to life. In order to achieve success to the greatest extent possible, an educated and engaged work force is a requirement, not a luxury. Also consider this: a leader doesn't have to have a position of authority. A worker who encourages and supports his/her peers is a leader and is in turn creating followership.

There's Learning & ago I had the opportunity to attend a talk given by John A. Powell.

Three different times this week, including once today, I pulled out the little notebook in which I had scribbled notes. With apologies to Professor Powell, what follows is my best interpretation of my own hurried handwriting (Powell’s words, of course, in quotations).

A take on inequality that had not occurred to me:

“Inequality is a sign of an economically and socially inefficient region where proper investments are not made in human capital, and where much of the population cannot meet its creative potential. These disparities make a region less competitive nationally and globally.”

Powell’s definition of racism sheds fresh light on an (whether we acknowledge it or not) ever present issue:

“…institutionalized de-linking of fate.”

His perspective on globalization was eye-opening for me:

“…interconnectedness is on the commodity level; on the human level we are still coming from a place of tribalism.”

Making a connection on the human level matters because “we are not just economic animals.”

If you are familiar with the concept of a canary in the coalmine, you might appreciate this: “Marginalized communities are canaries in our social system… When the canary got sick in the 70s, we focused on the wrong thing, and thus lost 30 years.”

“3 strategies” are needed to foster equity in a region:

“-Community benefits agreements

-Racial impact statements

-Education”

“…need diverse coalitions with:

-power

-information (type of power when applied)

-network”

There ya have it! Consider it both a celebration of gratitude, and a "cautionary tale".

I remind you that the power of the 8 Minute Ripple philosophy extends far beyond the office, far beyond one’s career, into the lives of all with whom we come in contact… especially into the lives of children. Whether they are our own children, or someone else’s, on some level we are all responsible to them. Before we go any further, please DO NOT start signing “I believe the children are the future.” I believe that song has provided more leeway for clichéd rhetoric, from adults in positions of power, who abdicate responsibility for the constellations-of-crap they create and then leave behind.

Yes, it is true that our children will be the ones living on into the future, after we have shuffled off our respective mortal coils from this lifetime [apologies to Willie S.]. The reality of our collective life is that, on the organizational and societal levels, it is we adults who are creating the future that our children must step into, must deal with. We are the ones making the future; we are the ones leaving behind a legacy!! What kind of legacy do you think it should be?? No... what kind of legacy do you believe it should be??

Let us get back to the teenagers I have been working with, to whom Steve came and spoke.

Steve planted seeds, created ripples, that (just like with any other human beings) will take the time it needs to take to sprout. My understanding of it all is this: whether it's kids living in poverty and violence, or kids living in wealth and affluence, or somewhere in between… all of them need their spirits nurtured, their self-esteem, sense of self-worth, value, and place in the world, mentored and nurtured to a healthy level; the high concept ideas (leadership, ethics, honor, mission, career, etc.) follow after that.

Everyday I see how tough it is for so many "adults," from all walks of life, to get a handle on those intangibles that I just listed, and thus get impatient with children… it's because those “grownups” have lost touch with those things that really matter within themselves. Some will say it's just because of life being hard. Others will say they "don't have time for that touchy feely nonsense." And still others will just be utterly confused and say "I don't know what happened." So, the children of this world, and the adults around them, are very fortunate that there are people like Steve with the courage, vision, and creativity to truly make a difference.

I am grateful to Steve for helping me show the kids in my program that they are valued!!!!

# # #

More about Authenticity

Linda Ford, one of my mentors, has commented on authenticity.

# # #

Excellence: The Role of Ethics (pt. 2)

Striving to be ethical is about striving for excellence; which is ultimately about the search for the truths that arise as a result of striving for authenticity.

For the individual, it is about the discovery of personal truths (i.e. our values); for organizations (for-profit and nonprofit) it is about collective truths (i.e. organizational values).

Without authenticity, without making the effort to come to an understanding of our personal truths, we are unable to make the fullest, most positive, contributions to the world around us. That depends on whether we have values in common (because ethics are the framework through which we enact our values). Circular reasoning of some kind? Perhaps. But it is key to understanding the root of successful collaboration among human beings. And human success, genuine progress, is so dependant on one form of collaboration or another.

If we do not strive for personal excellence, our collaborative efforts (our striving for collective excellence) will be but a pale shadow of what human potential genuinely grants us…

If only we would choose to grasp that potential and really fly with it!

# # #

Excellence: The Role of Ethics (pt. 1)

Ethics are the framework through which we enact our values. So, the simplest, most essential, personal response to this designated topic is to say that my ethics provide me a framework through which to put my personal values into action; action that is geared towards striving for authenticity and just behavior in my life.
Now what on earth does that mean?

Let’s approach this from another angle… A common lament that has come my way is “Yeah, MagnumVox… this whole ethics thing is great and all, it sounds good on paper. But who really has time to try and be perfect?”

Aye, there’s the rub: the misunderstanding (mostly based on the misrepresentation) that ethical behavior is about trying to be perfect.

Perfection is a concept about the ideal, sometimes the fantasized ideal, which does not necessarily have anything to do with the way things really are. Often enough, the intimidation we feel about “trying to be perfect” provides us a copout: “…well, you know, if this were a perfect world…”

I understand that; I sympathize and empathize with that. In fact, I gave up trying to be perfect, and do perfect things, many, many years ago. Trying to be, do, make perfect is unrealistic.

What I do believe in is striving for excellence.

Now, I am well aware that in dictionaries and thesaurus “excellence” is presented as a synonym for “perfect.”

I disagree.

Here is my personal definition of “excellence”: making the effort to bring out the best in one’s self, and to bring the best of one’s self to situations, via striving for authenticity in one’s life.

# # #

The Incomparable Myrna Loy

You know us men… there’s always an actress or two (okay, or three or four) that make us go “gaga” – which is to say, “get all hot and bothered.”

A couple of weeks ago, one of my dear friends asked me who my favorite actresses are – as in, which ones make me go “gaga”.

I suspect she was expecting me to list names from the current crop of Hollywood starlets.

I didn’t.

One of the first names that flew off my tongue is Myrna Loy. The heyday of her film career was in Hollywood’s golden era: 1930s-1940s (her last screen appearance was in 1981).

When I view her films, it’s not the characters she plays that “sends” me; it’s how she chooses to play those characters that moves right into me: the intelligence, craft, inspiration and creativity at work there.

Myrna took that intelligence, craft, inspiration and creativity into her life outside of acting as a social activist. Yes, it is true that there are contemporary Hollywood folks who are socially conscious and are activist in one form or another. But never forget that, as the film industry goes, it was people like Myrna, and her like spirited contemporaries, that paved the way for celebrities actively giving back to the world.

What was her internal motivation for doing this? I’ll let her explain it in her own words (which also provide a clue about her perspective on acting):

“Life, is not a having and a getting, but a being and a becoming.”
- Myrna Loy

So, the next time August 2nd rolls around (Myrna’s birthday), join me in toasting a wonderful person who exemplified “being and becoming.”

P.S. And yes, I think Myrna is absolutely beautiful!!

# # #

The Power of Language

Language has power.

It is amazing what a profound difference one word can make.

How we describe ourselves to ourselves, much less to others, is of paramount importance: it is an opportunity to plant a seed of light, or a seed of darkness.

The use of “social jargon” words like “loser,” and so on, is something about which we owe it to ourselves to be very wary. Our words create frameworks of perception which lay the pattern for what we will draw out of ourselves. These frameworks of self-perception lay the pattern for how others will relate to us.

The energy we send out is the energy we get back.

The language around how we think and speak about other people deserves just as much attention. The frameworks of perception created by that choice of words do affect how we interact with others. Therefore we potentially get what we draw out of them…

We get what we ask for: the energy we anticipate is the energy that greats us.

Taking all of this into consideration…

What seeds will you plant within yourself?

What sort of energy will you elicit from others?

# # #

Coaching Services

MagnumVox Coaching

2 Options for Individual Coaching

The <st1:street style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 51, 0);"><st1:address>MagnumVox Way</st1:address></st1:street>: Achieving Optimal Leadership Performance
Seeking to benefit from the equivalent of a “makeover” for your inner-world?
This coaching program provides that. In the ensuing years, there was much hue and cry about the opening line of that song, which has often been used as a rallying call. What has happened since then? They may genuinely believe that you and I are in need of a lesson, and they suppose they happen to know exactly how that lesson should be taught.

Well… talk about the road to hell being paved with less-than-good intentions. Talk about subscribing to the lowest common denominator. But, if that’s the way they want to be, then that’s the way they want to be.

If people want to think the worst of us, that is ultimately on them and in their own minds; and it just goes to show how little they actually know you and I. Having said that, it is a natural enough reaction to jump to conclusions and ascribe less than noble motives to others - particularly if the “conclusion-jumper” is struggling with those things within their own life/self - and if that life/self is not involved in learning and growing.

If you think about it, a “conclusion-jumper” lives in a pretty lonely, bitter place, in a state of perpetual dissatisfaction.

None of us can fix the situation for that person. We can only give the “conclusion-jumper” our compassion by way of setting boundaries that reflect back what appropriate and healthy behavior looks like. The “conclusion-jumper” has to reach a point where s/he no longer wants to live in that state of perpetual dissatisfaction, and is finally ready to choose for her/his own self the most appropriate form of help.

I hope that, in time, we will all strive to attain a way of being in which we not only seek out the best in others, but also bring out the best in others, as we seek out the best, and bring out the best, in ourselves.

# # #

Full Cup -vs- Empty Cup

A cup has form and function (can be a work of art). He had not only surpassed all the other merchants in his village, he had become the richest man in the entire district.

He wanted for nothing, and for all intents and purposes, there was not a single material good he did not already have, or could not easily acquire with a mere wink and a nod (and as we all know, “A Nod is As Good As a Wink to a Blind Horse”).

Therefore, the matter that now plagued him was to determine what his next conquest should be.

He realized it should be knowledge. Certainly he already had all the knowledge he needed to be a successful merchant. Now though, he would pursue knowledge about everything else. He set about hiring the best tutors and collecting the best reading material, which his coin could very easily buy.

In time, the merchant reached another plateau. It was all on account of overhearing one of his elderly tenant farmers mutter “what is all this expensive knowledge worth without wisdom.”

The merchant was so struck by this observation, he actually forgot to be furious with the old man’s insolence much less remember to demand that his head be separated from his shoulders.

Wisdom. Now where was one to purchase wisdom? No answer to that question seemed to be forthcoming.

Deciding that going for a ride would help his thinking, the merchant made his way over to his stables. As he entered he overheard his horse-master commenting to a stable boy that he greatly admired the wisdom of the monks in the temple at the top of the hill. They did so much meditating surely they knew and comprehended every single note of the very song of the celestial spheres themselves. What greater wisdom could there be than that?

Once again, the merchant was so struck by what he had heard, he completely forgot to behave in his usual manner.

Immediately turning on his heel, the merchant rapidly waddled his way to his chambers. Upon the arrival of the bellowed-for scribe, he began to dictate a letter.

The next morning, a servant was sent to deliver the letter, which begged permission for an audience, to the head monk at the temple on the top of the hill. Half past midday, the servant returned with the head monk’s reply: the merchant was welcome to come join him for tea on the following day.

There was not a more eager soul alive that following day as the merchant rode to the temple at the top of the hill. Upon his arrival, with little fanfare, he was ushered in directly to see the head monk.

Once the merchant had bowed and then seated himself, the head monk spoke.

“Now, my son, tell me why you asked to see me today.”

“Oh great master, please let me be your student. I have worked and studied so very hard. In fact, I am quite accomplished! I have…” and thus the merchant launched into an oratory on all the finer points of his intellectual prowess. That is, he spoke until he saw something that brought him to a stammering halt, something that left him gawking and staring.

“M-m-master! What are you doing?”

After filling a cup with tea for himself, the head monk had begun to fill a cup for the merchant; yet, he had not ceased pouring. Before the merchant’s eyes, the tea flowed over the lip of the cup, over the rim of the tea tray, onto the surface of the low table, and splashed onto the floor, creating rivulets that were now heading straight towards his feet.

The head monk spoke:
“You are like this cup; so full that there is no space for anything new.”

# # #

Charm: If ever you were in doubt…

Charm is a way of getting the answer yes without asking a clear question.
~ Albert Camus

Common Sense??

Ever notice how self-congratulatory you sound when you say “It’s just common sense!”?

There is no such thing as common sense.

What we call “common sense” are actually culturally specific, generation specific, gender specific, experience specific, field specific, training specific – yes, the list goes on and on – notions about what we, as individuals, think is something that is soooo obvious surely everyone in the world already knows it.

Get real!
How are you supposed to know something unless someone teaches it to you, or you are able to learn about it on your own? (That’s why it really chaps my hide when someone does the whole “common sense” trip on a child.)

Having said all that, time and time again, perfectly well educated adults provide fine examples of having none of the aforementioned common sense. Yesterday, I heard this said about the leaders of the Enron debacle. Highly educated and ostensibly qualified, yet merrily skipping down the road to disaster. So what gives?

Maybe they did believe they had common sense… it just happened to be directed in a less than positive way. (Hmmm… honor among thieves, common sense among criminals?)

Anyhow, let’s quit wasting time assuming all sorts of things are common sense only to find out, the hard way, that they actually are not…
If we think something is important enough that others should already know it, let’s not assume; let’s communicate.

Here’s another take on the nature of “common sense”:
"Common sense is the collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen."
- Albert Einstein

I wasn’t going to be as harsh, but what he had to say merits consideration.

# # #

My Pic 2

Mentors

Mentors…

Just like guitars, there is no such thing as having too many of them!

If you have those that are women, and those that are men, even better; it only benefits you, makes you a more effective participant in the world around you, to get their differing perspectives.

If your mentors come from different arenas/walks of life, different backgrounds, so much the better still! They don’t have to know each other. And if they do, they don’t have to like each other.

The different sets of experience, knowledge, and wisdom are all valid in their own right, even when they seem contradictory.

Such is the way of life… that no two of us shall ever have an identical existence.

What you will gain from the struggle of working through these quandaries only benefits you, makes you a more effective participant in the world around you.

The beauty of it is that while you are being presented with all these gifts, you are also learning about how YOU will be a mentor to others.

Make no mistake!!
